The Department of Management Science and Engineering of Jilin University is entitled to grant bachelor's, master's and doctor's degrees. It is positioned as key discipline with advantages and characteristics in the 12th Five-year Plan and 13th Five-year Plan of the higher education of Jilin Province. The major originated from the Department of Engineering and Economics established in 1955, and was renamed as the Department of Management Engineering in 1978. In 1981, the department became eligible to grant master's degree, thus becoming one of the earliest institutions in China to enroll postgraduates; in 2003, it got the right to grant doctor’s degree for first-level disciplinary; in 2006, it was awarded as key discipline in Jilin Province; in 2009, it was approved to set up a mobile postdoctoral station in management science and engineering; and in 2011 it was identified as a key discipline with advantages and characteristics in Jilin Province.

The department is positioning itself as a talent training base and scientific research center with wide coverage, complete discipline system, balanced research team and stable research directions. For all research directions, there are well-structured teams and the research has reached a leading level in China.

The department has a time-honored history, with a well-established and solid foundation. Talents in theoretical and practical fields fostered in the department provide a solid foundation for the development of the discipline. The specialized and distinctive research and strong team contribute to high output efficiency ratio. With the research direction of management information system theory and method as the core, a number of distinctive research results have been achieved. We serve economic construction and social services, and highlight the functions of the new think tank in decision-making and policy consultation. In the process of development, we have always adhered to the close combination of teaching, scientific research and social services with industrial production. We make contribution not only to the theoretical research, but also to the development of agricultural technology and economy in Northeast China, especially in Jilin Province. Graduates are adaptive and responsive to social demands. In the new era of the Internet, big data, big logistics and mega projects, the objectives and systems for training talents of management science and engineering are in line with the trends of the Internet era and the social and economic development.
