From July 20 to July 28, 2019, 25 undergraduates of Class 2017 in Archival Science at the School of Management went to Taiwan for archival business visits and internship, led by Mr. Zhang Weidong and Ms. Guo Yu. The program was organized by Chinese Culture University (CCU), a sister school of Jilin University. During the program, students lived in the on-campus dormitory of CCU. They had the opportunity to experience the learning atmosphere of Taiwanese universities, and study and communicate with CCU students. This program focused on two aspects: thematic courses and field visits.

In thematic courses, teachers at the Chinese Culture University gave wonderful specialized courses, including E-Commerce and Social Networking, Overview and Practice of Library and Information Science, Theory and Practice of Digital Archive, Cloud Computing and Mobile Technology, and Information Technology as an Efficient Management Instrument. Teachers took the development of Taiwan as an example when introducing theories, and explained archival business in simple terms from different perspectives.

During the field visits, students visited institutions and places related to archival business such as the library and the museum of CCU, and Taipei Palace Museum. At Taipei Palace Museum, students participated in cultural relics training courses and circular exhibitions. Teachers and staff at the library and museums explained their history and development, layout and function, books and collections, and communicated with and answered questions from students on professional issues. From the field visits, students gained knowledge about information management and archive digitalization in institutions such as libraries and museums in Taiwan. They also had an in-depth look into local historical changes and cultural heritage, and enhanced their humanities accomplishment.

In the seven days, students studied together with local teachers and students, deeply experienced the daily study and life of students in Taiwan universities, and made good friends, bringing the trip to a successful conclusion. After the program, students said that they had learned a lot.

Though not for long, it was enough for me to experience the profound learning atmosphere and good teacher-student relationship at Chinese Culture University. The teachers were very patient and explained professional knowledge in plain language. Among them, I was most impressed by Ms. Wu Ruixiu, director of the library of Chinese Culture University. She took the campus library and Taipei Palace Museum as examples to explain the good development of Library and Information Science in Taiwan.

During the exchange at Chinese Culture University, we took the courses taught by teachers at Chinese Culture University, looked into professional issues from different perspectives, and gained a first-hand experience of Taiwanese customs and culture in a week. We had a deeper understanding of the cultural differences between the two sides of the Strait, and also deeply realized that the cultures of the Mainland and Taiwan share the same root, the people living on both sides of the Straits share ties of blood, and Taiwan is an integral part of China.

I am very glad to study and explore in Taiwan with my classmates who share my passion and dreams. During the short 7-day trip to Taiwan, I saw different modes of teaching, assessment, and course learning on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, which expanded my horizons and improved my comprehensive accomplishment. During the trip to Taiwan, what is important, I think, is not only the knowledge written in books, but also the social knowledge, ideas and more that are not written in books.

I am deeply impressed at this summer program. It was not only about communication on Archive Science, but also promoted an in-depth understanding between university students on both sides of the Straits. CCU gave us many surprises in this trip: we visited the library, Hwa-Kang Museum, and teaching buildings at CCU. I have learned a lot from CCU in terms of Library Science, Archive Digitalization, and many other aspects. Taiwan has been very successful in digital application in various fields. In addition, I feel attached to the local customs of the wonderful island.

I was delighted to travel from northern China to Taiwan for an internship. During the 7-day trip, we learned a lot from the specialized courses. We were taken good care of by the hospitable teachers and students, and experienced local customs and culture of Taiwan. The brief encounter is an unforgettable memory. I would like to give my sincere thanks to all the teachers for their efforts! I hope to participate more in programs like this in the future!
